La Liga: Vinicius Jr racism allegations in Spanish (Site notre bureau spécialisé) - what happens next?
Vinicius Jr has suffered racial abuse on multiple grounds this season in Spain

Spanish (Site notre bureau spécialisé) faces a major problem of racism.

Vinicius Jr alone has been the target of alleged racial abuse five times this season. According to Spanish (Site notre bureau spécialisé) journalist Guillem Balague, « not a single person in Spain has been convicted or punished for a racist incident related to (Site notre bureau spécialisé) ».

Have we now reached a « turning point »?

The Real Madrid Brazilian winger has repeatedly called on the authorities to crack down, with Mallorca fans at least the third group of supporters this season to racially abuse the 22-year-old.

In September, it can be compared to a song on television in Spanish. Last month an effigy has been attached of a motorway bridge near Real’s training ground.

La Liga says it frequently forwards cases of racism to local prosecutors – but cannot act on its own.

Why has no one been punished?

Unlike other (Site notre bureau spécialisé) authorities, La Liga say they cannot hand out penalties for fan racism alone.

In England, the Premier League should not ban lightly behaved in a discriminatory or abusive manner.

UEFA and Fifa both punish teams for racial abuse by their fans – although many believe their penalties don’t go far enough.

Spanish sides Atlético Madrid – with a section of their ground closed – and Sevilla – with a fine of 5,000 euros – were both punished by UEFA after Champions League games against Manchester City the last year.

But all La Liga can do is file reports with various legal bodies – and none have ever resulted in prosecution.

« Surely there must be mechanics at the behest of (Site notre bureau spécialisé) – be it La Liga or the Spanish FA – to say that if the crowd misbehaves and the officials hear that, there can be a punishment, the game can be abandoned, clubs can be fined,” Raphael Honigstein said on the BBC Euroleague podcast.

“There must be a sporting mechanism to manage this. I don’t understand how La Liga say we referred them to prosecutors, but unfortunately we haven’t heard anything, that’s all we can do. That doesn’t sound very satisfying. »

Balague said: « I believe in La Liga when they say they can’t do anything anymore because it’s not in their domain, they don’t have the power to do it. But the other authorities should change their minds.

“La Liga report these insults to the prosecution and this can engage them in a civil case. They can also report them to the State Commission against Violence, Racism, Xenophobia and Intolerance.

“They can also contact the competition committee. It depends on the federation. There have been no strong measures from the Competition Committee to address this issue.

“The rules are very clear, if they [authorities] have enough evidence that they can go and punish someone, but in many cases they say they don’t know who did it, they don’t have enough information, enough evidence, so put things away.

La Liga recently put into evidence six cases and their latest legal status…

  • Inaki Williams: Espanyol fans shouting racial injuries at the Athletic Bilbao player in January 2020 have been transferred from a Catalan court to the prosecution and La Liga (as an accusing party) so they can ask for the opening of a process.
  • Nico Williams: Inaki’s brother and Athletic teammate, Nico was racially assaulted by a Real Betis fan in March 2022. This case was closed because after reviewing the fan’s social media accounts they decided ‘he is not a person who intends to promote racism”.
  • Vinicius Jr (1): La Liga filed a complaint with the Barcelona public prosecutor’s office for hate crimes after the October 2021 Clasico. The complaint was dropped « because the perpetrators have not been identified ».
  • Vinicius Jr (2): A complaint against Mallorca supporters in March 2022 – separate from the last complaint – was dismissed as it was found to lack « the claimed public criminal dimension ».
  • Vinicius Jr (3): Racist chants against Vinicius Jr by Atletico Madrid fans in September 2022 have been reported. Madrid’s public prosecutor’s office described the wider racist chants as distasteful, inappropriate and disrespectful, but also said they only lasted a few seconds and took place in a game involving maximum rivalry.
  • Carlos Akapo: Akapo, all at Cádiz, suffered racist abuse during a game against Granada in February 2022. The club identified the supporter, who turned himself in to the police. He is still under investigation by the Granada prosecutor’s office for hate crimes a year later.

« Prosecutors must do better, » said European (Site notre bureau spécialisé) journalist Julien Laurens. “It’s like they’re trying to find excuses to let people go. It’s not sufficient. »

Balague added: « If I have the impression that something has changed because this week a procedure was applied against the fans of their own club. Valladolid said it was linked to racial slurs towards Vinicius and told 10 fans they would be banned.

“But the club describes them as isolated cases and also adds that this does not mean that the fans are racist. This is at the root of the problem. »

Why always Vinicius Jr?

A game in Barcelona in October 2021 is one of the names of the match between Vinicius and an abuse victim

There are many instances of racism in Spanish (Site notre bureau spécialisé), but many seem to focus on Vinicius, one of La Liga’s best players.

He scored 32 goals and made 17 assists in 137 La Liga games, helping Real Madrid win the league title twice and the Champions League once.

“Vinicius is the victim of something that I don’t understand. It has to be solved”, a patron son declared Carlo Ancelotti.

« It seems the problem is Vinicius, and it’s not like that. »

A panelist on a Spanish (Site notre bureau spécialisé) show plus all season to compare his corn celebrations to a monkey. Vinicius posted a video statement in response to the ‘xenophobic and racist’ slur, saying he ‘won’t stop dancing’ and that ‘the happiness of a successful black Brazilian in Europe bothers’ a lot of people .

On the latest incidents, Laurens said: “It has to be a turning point. I can’t remember any other player in the modern era who was targeted as much as vini on the pitch by defenders but especially off the pitch by the opposition. Fans. It’s disgusting.

Balague said, “The media didn’t take it all seriously. They made it part of a debate, like ‘Is Vinicius responsible for what’s happening to him? Are his dribbling and his provocation causing the rise of racist incidents in the stadiums? ‘ This is not the debate that should be taking place.

« Those who say it’s up to Vinicius, they look at the stats and say he hasn’t scored in nine games, he plays poorly when provoked and all the players and fans provoke him to get an inferior version. by Vinicius.

“The source chose horrible to say – say anything is allowed for this to happen, including racial slurs. »

The problem of Spanish society

Racism in (Site notre bureau spécialisé) is far from isolated – and is still a branch of racism that exists in society.

« Apart from the work that La Liga is doing, I don’t think there could be any real interest in fighting this openly and clearly. Socially it doesn’t seem like an urgent thing to do,” said Balague, who is Spanish.

“There is no feeling on the streets of Spain that this is an urgent matter. Many blame Vinicius for what is happening.

« Why does the sports media not [in Spain] take it to the series? General because the (Site notre bureau spécialisé) media does not take (Site notre bureau spécialisé) and sport seriously. It’s a cartoonish thing that you can debate.

“You defend a team. You are a Real Madrid journalist, you are against Barcelona. The debates are really extreme. There is no intention to take this out of the sports arena and study it properly.

« In the UK it’s a daily debate and discussion – at some point on the radio or TV – it’s there. This does not happen in Spain or Italy.

“No country is perfect. It is a daily fight that will continue forever. I have the impression that discrimination is omnipresent. I would like us to learn a lot from what happened in the UK and what is happening in France. »

Laurens said, “It has to be a joint effort. It has to be La Liga and the government, it has to go through education. Going to school and educating kids about racism and what it’s like to have a different skin color. All of this has to be there so that the next generation doesn’t repeat what we see now. »
