Winners of the Nations League of France
Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Houssem Aouar apparently wants to play for Algeria instead of France. This was declared by the president of the Algerian association Djahid Zefizef on the channel « Chaîne 3 ». The 24-year-old ‘promised us’, said Zefizef (as quoted via ‘RMC Sport’). The same goes for left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri (21) of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Aouar has been playing for his native France since the Under-17s but, having only played in the A friendly in 2020, is eligible for a transfer. Although he is considered the winner of the 2021 Nations League, he was only included in the squad once during the tournament. Aouar himself has yet to publicly comment on this.
According to the Algerian official, talks are also underway with storm talent Amine Gouiri of FC Stade Rennes. « In his case, however, nothing has been decided yet, » Zefizef said. The striker, also from the youth of Lyon, is a French international U21 and has not yet been called up for the title of vice-world champion. He last appeared in Sylvain Ripoll’s team in November. Aït-Nouri, although younger, was last part of the France youth team in 2020.
Second nationality and non-A matches: Aouar & Co. eligible to play for Algeria
Place of birth is the primary criteria used to determine which countries a player can play for. The professional himself, his mother, his father or one of the grandparents must have been born in the territory of the federation. All other family members do not count – neither the adoptive parents, nor the great-grandfather, nor your own wife. If a professional cannot meet the birthplace criteria, it is possible to be eligible to play for a country after several years of residence.
Until 2020, there were also very clear rules: if a professional was on the pitch, even for a second, in an official competition A match such as the European Championship qualifiers, he there was no possibility of change. In some cases, even international youth matches could mean that it is no longer possible to change associations. If a player already has both nationalities when he plays for the first time in a youth competition such as the European U19 Championship, he can change associations afterwards. Even if a player does not receive his second citizenship until after his youth tournament matches, it is still possible to change nationality. The last game of the junior competition must have taken place before the 21st birthday. The latter applies to Aït-Nouri, but not to Aouar and Gouiri, but the former.
